The Old-Time Fiddle Class with Kate Lissauer by Becky

Steve and I have just returned from a week at the Sore Fingers Summer School - a course dedicated to Bluegrass and Old-Time playing based at Kingham Hill School in the Cotswolds and ably organised by John Wirtz and Andrea Gauden. It was truly amazing.

This is what we had to "endure" during the week -

  • 5 hours+ of tuition a day from some of the greatest names in the business (Danny Thompson, Kate Lissauer, Pete Wernick, Kenny Kosek, Sally Van Meter, DeDe Wyland, Barry Mitterhoff, John Hollandsworth)
  • A chance to form a 'scratch' band and perform in the student concert - more nervewracking than you think!
  • Late-night sessions in the bar.
  • A chance to try a new instrument at the "dip-ins".
  • A chance to brush up on performance techniques.

There was never a dull moment or time to slack.

Highlights of the Week

  • Steve teaching Danny Thompson how to slap bass.
  • Kenny Kosek sessioning in the bar - what a cool guy!
  • Performing in the student concert.
  • Learning loads of new tunes.
  • Meeting some lovely people and some old faces.
  • Being well-fed and watered.
  • Having a nice hot bath every morning.
  • Playing in the sunshine.
  • Playing my fiddle with Danny Thompson - cooee!!
  • Swapping addresses and promising to keep in touch!?!
  • Signing up for next year...
